Warmest greetings to everyone! I would like to welcome all of you to the 2016 Annual Meeting of the Academy of Filipino Neurosurgeons, Inc.
This year marks several important changes for the Academy. For the first time, we now have our own venue for our meeting, the Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria Hotel, which is bigger and more affordable than our previous venue and can easily accommodate all our Fellows, residents and guests during the Annual Scientific Meeting and Annual Dinner.
The theme of this year’s Annual Scientific Meeting is “The Emergence of Philippine Neurosurgical Subspecialties”, with presentations by our young Fellows who have taken up the daunting challenge of initiating and developing the different neurosurgical subspecialties in the country. For the past years, we have seen a growing number of our new neurosurgical graduates going out abroad for training in the various neurosurgical subspecialties and going back to practice and teach their expertise as young Fellows of the Academy. We are indeed very fortunate to have them with us and in this year’s Annual Scientific Meeting we have given our young Fellows the opportunity to share with us their knowledge and vision for their particular fields of expertise. The delivery of focused expertise by these neurosurgical subspecialists would hopefully translate to improved patient care and outcomes for our Filipino patients. The Chair of our Scientific Meeting, our Vice-President, Dr. Eusebio Debuque helped cultivate this idea about the meeting and was instrumental in making this event possible.
This year also saw the Academy resuming the practice of conducting its Monthly Scientific Meetings at the different neurosurgery training institutions in the country. This had led to improved attendance and participation, allowed our Fellows and residents to visit and interact with the various training institutions to foster camaraderie, and gave an opportunity for the training institutions to showcase and present their own neurosurgical experience.
The AFN also visited the various AFN Regional Sections in Visayas and Mindanao and participated in their highly successful scientific meetings and workshops. We hope to see these visits and scientific meetings in the AFN regions as becoming a regular activity of the Academy, since we are now witnessing a very positive trend of our new Fellows starting their practice in these needy areas outside crowded Metro Manila.
We continue to support and encourage our neurosurgery residents to bond together and organize themselves so as to foster kinship and friendship among the different training institutions, share their experiences, and probably also their resources. Hopefully they will carry over these relationships even when they join the Academy as Fellows and propagate the value of collegiality and cooperation to advance the practice of Philippine Neurosurgery.
We would also like to thank all those who contributed in making a success our AFN fundraising activity held last May 2016. May we continue to have more successful fundraising activities and be able to raise revenue for our various projects and activities.
Finally, I would like to thank again all our Fellows and supporters for their invaluable support and contributions to the Academy.
Mabuhay ang AFN!
